Typically when people think of smudging, they think of white sage. Unfortunately due to this line of thinking, white sage is becoming completely overharvested and sparse. When we engage in a sacred act of smudging, we need to keep in mind how the plant was harvested and how that impacts the environment and local cultures.

Palo santo (Bursera graveolens) is another popular smudging option that has fallen victim to the same overharvesting practices.

Palo Santo is officially considered endangered due to over harvesting.

My source for Palo Santo lives in Peru and only harvests already fallen branches and twigs of the tree. The supplier also plants new trees on the land to aid in the reforestation of this sacred tree.

This plant was not harmed.

it is extremely important to only purchase palo santo harvested from the fallen limbs due to its status as endangered.

Palo Santo, also known as Holy Wood, has a very fresh and resinous smell and is one of the most fragrant trees in the world.
