Sweetgrass Braid, Natural Incense and Smudge

When most people think of smudging, they think of white sage. Because of the popularity of white sage smudging, the plant is now being abused and overharvested. There is little regard to the local environmental impacts, as well as the impacts on local cultures.

There are several other options for smudging, like Sweetgrass (Hierochloe odorats), also known as Holy Grass, and i am happy to offer them to you here.

Sweetgrass is a long, hardy herb with a sweet vanilla-like scent. Sweetgrass is used in prayer, smudging and purifying ceremonies, or simply burned for its pleasant aroma. It is considered a sacred plant and the smoke from Sweetgrass is thought to attract positive energies.

The dried herb is woven into tight braids, which do not burn but rather smolder like incense.

My Sweetgrass braids come from ethical wildcrafters who harvest the plant in a responsible, ecologically sound and respectful way. The plants were not harmed and nothing was wasted.
