Elderberry syrup is what you reach for at first sign of cold to lessen the severity and duration of symptoms. It is NOT something you take daily to prevent illness. While you could take small preventative doses to potentially help ward off a cold when everyone around you is getting sick, generally it’s best to not think of elderberry as a daily, immune boosting supplement and rather as a powerful weapon in your arsenal when you’re just beginning to feel symptoms.

As a note, based on a successful scientific trial, it could also be beneficial to take elderberry as a preventative measure when flying and traveling to new places.

Generally, however, do not take elderberry daily.

The Elder tree is legendary and believed to house the spirit of Elda Mor (Hylde-Moer), the Elder Mother.

Elder is considered antiviral, diaphoretic, antibacterial, and nervine. It works by strengthening cell membranes against viral penetration, possibly by inhibiting the viral enzyme that weakens the membrane. It also significantly increases the production of cytokines, chemical messengers that enhance communication between white blood cells and the body during an infection. Ederberry is anti-inflammatory and beneficial for arthritic conditions. It is blood building and iron rich and can be helpful in cases of anemia. The anthocyanins (a type of bioflavonoid) in the berries protect blood vessel walls from oxidative stress (preventing vascular disease) and lower cholesterol, which helps prevent atherosclerosis. The antioxidant activity of the berries makes them a preventive for cancer.

My syrup also contains clove, for its extremely potent levels of antioxidants, rosehips for a strong boost of Vitamin C, and ginger, orange peel and star anise for their beautiful flavor profiles and multitude of immune supporting properties.

This mix is made from a combination of tincture, decoction and raw honey infusion in order to extract all water and alcohol soluble properties. The alcohol content of this syrup makes it shelf stable for up to 2 years! When in doubt, store in the fridge. This blend is only 25% alcohol and is safe for kids.

If you struggle with severe autoimmune disorder, please talk to your doctor before taking elderberry as it is very stimulating to the immune system and could cause a flare.

Dosing: Dosing can be flexible and intuitive, but here are are some suggestions and guidelines.

**Syrup is not recommended for children under 12 months of age as it can contain botulism spores which the babies do not have an immunity to.**

For acute infections, take 2 teaspoons (10 ml) every 2 hours at the first sign of a cold, flu, or other viral infection. If sickness takes hold, continue with 2 teaspoons (10 ml) five times a day during the acute and secondary stages of a viral illness.

You may safely reduce to 1 teaspoon 3-6x a day, or 1 tablespoon 1-4x a day.
